Our Story

In 2017, a serendipitous encounter brought us together. Attracted by the stunning and varied scenery of Galloway and the opportunity of superb road and gravel cycling, walking and sailing, we chose to relocate from the Lake District to Kirkcudbright in 2018.

The purchase of a derelict farm-workers cottage meant living in a garden shed for almost two years while renovations were completed.

During this time, we bought Providence Cottage, a cosy retreat named after one of John Paul Jones' storied ships. Over the course of seven months, we transformed it into a welcoming haven for those seeking a comforting "home away from home" in Kirkcudbright's historic district.

In April 2021, we embarked on our next project: Serendipity. Over the course of two years, we have poured our hearts into a complete refurbishment, transforming it into a truly inviting space. The result is a wonderfully comfortable and spacious property that still radiates its original charm.

Ian

“My roots trace back to North Yorkshire, where I honed my skills as a yacht repairer and broker, and developed a passion for restoring houses. Alongside managing a blinds and shutters business throughout Dumfries and Galloway, I also oversee the maintenance of Providence Cottage and Serendipity.”

Louise

“While originally from Lancashire, it is my wealth of experience in the tourism industry in the Lake District that has shaped my journey. This background has refined my understanding of what guests deeply appreciate. This has proven invaluable in creating two wonderful properties. Managing these holiday homes allows me to combine my love of hospitality with my passion for creating inviting and comfortable spaces.”

Thankfully, the garden shed is now used for its intended purpose and we now reside in our cosy cottage, nestled three miles away from Kirkcudbright. We eagerly await the chance to extend our warm hospitality to you at Providence Cottage and Serendipity, and hope that you will enjoy a comfortable stay in this beautiful corner of Scotland.
